March 14, 2011 – The Kenya Hockey scene was a buzz with activity this past weekend with top teams on both the men and ladies league getting in the action.

On Sunday, last seasons mens runner-up Kenya police had a good start to their 2011 campaign by sinking USIU-A 1 – 0. The solitary goal was scored by former Wazalendo and Kisumu Simba player, Job Ondiro. The students gave a good account of themselves, showing a much improved side compared the their performance last season.

Sunday also saw new entrants Daystar University men and ladies teams take on seasoned teams Parklands (men) and ladies defending champions Orange respectively. It was clearly a bad day for the students as Parklands walloped the mens team 8 -0 while Orange made minced meat of the girls team, registering one of the highest ever score lines in Kenya Hockey Union history, 22 – 0.

Saturday matches were more competetive, with KHU national womens league regulars Sliders managing a hard-fought 2 – 0 win over the resilient Virgin Vikings. The goals came courtesy of Nerica Kuguru and Lynnette Onyango.

Sliders become the first team to defeat Virgin Vikings in open play this year.

Big league side Green Sharks also managed to get a 1 – 0 win over former heavy-weights Wazalendo to set their 2011 season starting on a positive note. The lone goal was netted by former Strathmore mid-fielder, Leon Magomere.
