Ksh. 40,000 for two days at Nairobis City Park hockey stadium

February 20, 2012…. Ksh. 40,000. That is the amount that the Kenya Hockey Union wants Greensharks Hockey Club – one of the oldest self-supporting clubs in Kenya – to pay to use the City Park Hockey stadium for two days.

And not only that; the amount must be paid upfront before any person sets foot at the stadium.

Greensharks have been planning the tournament (Greensharks David Olalo’s (Patron) memorial Hockey Tournament)  to honor its club patron, who passed on in a tragic road accident in December 2011.

The demands by the union has now forced the self-supporting club to change the venue of the tournament to the less expensive Barclays Sports Club along Thika road.Though having a murram surface, the club has better and cleaner facilities than the run-down city park stadium.

The hard stance taken by the union comes as a shocker to many – coming barely 3 days after the union pledged to support more local tournaments to give the much needed play time and exposure to players. This was after the board of the KHU unilaterally overruled requests by clubs that the KHU league be played on home-and-away basis as is the norm around the world.

Coming months after the union hiked the training fee for clubs at the stadium by 150% (from Ksh. 2000 to Ksh. 5000 per training session), pundits are left to wonder, if the union is building or destroying the game in Kenya.

Efforts to reach KHU Secretary General, Vivien Agunda, bore no fruits.

Do you think the KHU is playing its supporting role in the development of Hockey in Kenya? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
