Kenya University Sports Association appeals for funding

2nd December 2011…Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) requires Sh9 million to organise the third edition of the biannual games from December 16 to 21 at Ruaraka sports grounds.

Close to 2,400 participants from 25 institutions of higher learning will compete in 17 disciplines during the week-long championships.

Regional universities champions Kenyatta University won the last championships in 2009 at the University of Nairobi.

“We need funding since we have to hire competition facilities besides taking care of accommodation costs,” KUSA chairman Elijah Gitonga told a press conference at Strathmore University on Tuesday, adding that KUSA will also need to pay for medical services, security personnel and referees besides the medals, trophies and certificates to top performers.

Gitonga said there will be increased participation and events following affirmative action to incorporate both public and private universities, which has seen the venue moved from University of Nairobi (UoN) to the better equipped Ruaraka.

This year’s events, which have the theme “Greater heights through sports”, will be at Kenya Commercial Bank, Barclays Bank, Utalii College and Stima Club.

KUSA Secretary Isaac Mwangi said they will be strict to identify bona fide students despite there having been no reported cases of ‘mercenaries’.

Other than hockey, other sports to feature include: Athletics (all events except for hurdles), 15s rugby, badminton, basketball, chess, football, handball, hockey, karate, netball, scrabble, softball, swimming, tennis, tae kwon do and volleyball.

Besides Kenyatta University, who won the overall title in 2009 followed by the UoN and Moi University, Africa Nazarene, Catholic University, Chepkoilel, Daystar, Egerton, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kabarak, Kenya College of Accountancy and Kenya Methodist University will compete at the festival.

Others are Kenya Polytechnic, Kimathi, Kisii, Laikipia, Masinde Muliro, Mount Kenya, Multimedia, Presbyterian, South Eastern, St Paul’s, Strathmore and United States International universities.

One Response to Kenya University Sports Association appeals for funding

  1. Ken says:

Our University being a young one, i.e , Pwani University College which is a constituent university of Kenyatta university has never participated in any of the sporting activities read above. Due to the small population and funding, plus the fact that the institution still does not value sports, I, a staunch athlete have always wanted to participate in the games in vain. I love athletics and would want to beat Rudisha in 800m any time, anywhere. Can you please intervene and help accordingly;y.
