It would be unthinkable if Namibia does not participate at the 2011 African Cup Olympic Games qualifiers in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. This was the sentiment of the President of the African Hockey Federation Seif Ahmed and its treasurer Claire Digby as they visited Namibia over the past weekend.

The President and Treasurer expressed their support of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) promising that they would lobby the Namibian government to provide financial support to enable the national hockey team participate in the Olympic qualifiers, to begin in less than 3 weeks.

The President noted that the Namibia national teams (men and women) had captured the attention of the world with their impressive outing at the Indoor Hockey World Cup in Poland in February and that the team would add the much needed competitive edge to the upcoming games.

“We would also like to discuss how we can build an artificial turf here in Namibia because this will benefit Namibian hockey a lot. It would also give you a good chance of qualifying for the 2013 Junior World Cup,” said Seif Ahmed.

Jesse Schickerling, the president of the NHU,  said that they have not been able to raise the funds, now estimated in the region of at least N$4 million.

“Namibia’s women surprised many observers with their performances, while the men were by no means embarrassed. If Namibia can build an artificial turf and host the U21 African Cup it would be a fantastic opportunity for them. There would be about 20 teams here and it would be a great opportunity to showcase hockey in Namibia,”  said Claire Digby.

Other national hockey team such as Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria and hosts Zimbabwe have confirmed participation. Most of these teams are set to begin intensive residential camps in the coming days.
