Aura leads Navy to weekend wins as Nakuru shines

It looks as if nothing will halt debutants Kenya Navy’s charge for promotion to the KHU men’s hockey Premier League next season.

The Rashid Saidi-skippered Marines bolstered their campaign when they hauled six points from their tour of Nairobi to move to second place in the men’s National League with 13 points.

The fired-up Marines handed Nakuru Athletic their first defeat of the season, 3-2, on Saturday as Italy-based Zack Aura sunk a hat-trick.

The astute Aura was again on the spot with a brace as Nakuru glided past Kimathi University 4-2 the next day to move three places to second in the standings. Rashid and Evans Wanjala would compliment Aura’s efforts with a goal apiece.

However, the Marines’ attempt to dislodge Nakuru from the top fell short when the Great Rift side bounced back on Sunday to crush visiting Mombasa Sports Club 5-1 for their fourth win in a run that has two draws and a loss.

Kenya Navy could have cut Nakuru’s lead to a point but the coastal side, unbeaten in five outings, has two matches in hand over Nakuru.

“Nothing will stop our charge to the Premier League, where we want no other team but Police,” warned Rashid. “When Armed Forces was disbanded, Police said they would win the league title but they have not.”

Margaret Rotich and Jacqueline Mwangi hit a double each to spur visiting Telkom Orange to a 4-2 win over Mombasa Sports Club although the dominant Jos Openda’s charges conceded a goal for the first time this season, after seven matches. Esther Mwikali and Farida Hamisi replied.
