Police and Orange Kenya ladies register wins in KHU weekend matches.

June 29, 2011.. Kenya Hockey Union ladies defending champions Orange ladies cemented their position at the top of the 7 team table with a 4-0 drubbing of Strathmore University Scorpions at City Park, Nairobi.

Rattled by Betty Tioni’s quick goal in the early minutes of the first half, the Scorpions put up a spirited fight, managing to contain their opponents for much of the half.  The first half ended 1 -0 in favor of Orange.

The second half was dominated by Orange with on-form Jackline Mwangi netting two quick goals before veteran Jacqueline Atieno rounded it up with the 4th goal 4 minutes to time.

The weekend belonged to Jackline Mwangi who was celebrating her 32nd birthday.

Strathmore put up a good and entertaining fight and could have unsettled the champions in the first half after winning several short corners. The students lack of experience was evident especially going forward.

Strathmore’s inspirational captain Lilian Aura was clearly dominant in the mid-field and left the Orange ladies in sixes-and-sevens every time she had the ball in the midfield.

Orange ladies showed great composure and patience going forward but displayed a lack of the same whenever they lost possession of the ball, a weakness that Strathmore failed to capitalize on.

Orange continues to keep a clean sheet scoring 37 goals and conceding none all season.

In the KHU men’s premier league, Western Jaguars had mixed results from their city tour. Kenya Police put 8 goals past the visitors on Sunday morning with John Rioba getting a consolation goal for Jaguars. Felix Okoth and James Munyi scored a brace for the Police team. Other scorers for the Police were Nelson Ochieng, Oliver Echenje, Willis Okeyo and Roy Odhier.

Jaguars had earlier earned three points with a 2 – 1 win over relegation threatened Parkroad HC.

Nairobi Simba players warm up before a match

A sizzling entertaining match pitting USIU-A men vs Nairobi Simba was called off with 29 minutes of play left. This was after a heavy downpour in Nairobi.

The match was in its second half with both teams attacking and defending in equal measure, much to the joy of the electrified spectators. Simba’s mid-field dazzled their opponents with creative dribble and near 360 degree turns but were unable to penetrate the solid defense.

USIU-A displayed a very mature and experienced game, a stack contrast to their earlier league form that saw them struggle at the bottom of the league in the early stages of the 2011 season. They are a team to watch for any opponent that has not played them.

Other weekend matches saw Parklands Sports Club beat JKUAT 3-2 in an entertaining encounter. Eric Odendo, Fred Okeyo and Felix Opala scored for Parklands while Giles Simiyu and Ken Maruru scored for JKUAT.
