With the Kenya Hockey Union womens league taking a break this weekend, all eyes will be on the mens premier and national leagues.

The KHU national league has University of Nairobi (UoN) taking on Parklands on Saturday at 2 pm while the National Youth Service (NYS) welcome the newly created Kenya Navy team on Sunday at 10 am. Kenya Polytechnic entertain Multimedia University at 2 pm. All matches are to be at City Park.

The mens premier league is set for a fiery weekend with all the top teams in action.

National League

UoN is hoping to end its bad run and break into the top 5 by getting three points from Parklands. Parklands are currently in position 3 with 4 points from 3 games. A win for Parklands will take them to the second position, one behind league leaders Nakuru Athletic who are not in action this weekend.

Parklands get into the match as clear favorites and UoN will have to get its act together to regain its lost glory. UoN went down in history as the only university side to ever defeat the defunct Armed Forces team in the finals of the 2004/5* Vaisakhi International Tournament.

City Park, Nairobi is also set to play host to the newly created Kenya Navy team. The Mombasa based side is set to play its second league match against the NYS at City Park on Sunday at 10 am. Both teams are rooted at the bottom of the KHU national league table with NYS having played 2 games and losing both.

Kenya Navy starts as firm favorites.

Premier League

The mens premier league matches are set to take center stage with all the top 5 teams in action.

With the top 5 teams separated by only 3 points, a win or loss of any of the sides is bound to have a big influence on the league table come Monday 9th May.

Kenya Police vs Greensharks
First in line is the Saturday prime-time match pitting last years 1st and 2nd runner ups Kenya Police and Greensharks. The sharks have been the early pace setters getting all 9 points from their 3 games while Police are tipped to set the record straight on their title ambitions this year.

The last meeting between the two sided ended in a draw.

KCA players thank their fans after a previous league match

Police get into the match as favorites having won the Vaisakhi tournament less than a fortnight ago and forced a 1 – 1 league draw from KHU defending Champions Strathmore University Gladiators during the  Labor day weekend.

KCA vs Karate Axiom
Giant killers KCA University will also be inaction against debutants Karate Axiom.

Karate are currently in 7th position with 3 points from 3 games while KCA are on third position with 8 points from 4 games. Only last weekend, KCA played a remarkable game to earn three points at the expense of Nairobi Simba in a match that ended 4 – 3. KCA will be looking for a win and to build on their goal difference. The students are tied on 8 points with Strathmore University and are separated only by goal difference. Strathmore have a superior goal difference.

Strathmore Gladiators vs Wazalendo
Also in action will be the champions Strathmore University. The students take on the out-of-form Wazalendo in a Sunday 4 pm tie at City Park Nairobi.

Wazalendo are yet to regain their form, suffering 2 losses and earning 2 draws from 4 games. This is arguably Wazalendos worst start to a season. Strathmore is widely expected to call the shots on this match and a draw or win for Wazaendo would cause a major upset.

Strathmore are known to be weak on their defense and Wazalendo will be looking to exploit this. Players to watch in this match include Goldstein Mambiri, Douglas and Owiti in goal for Wazalendo and George Mutira, Desmond Wanangwe, Francis Eshikuri and Captain Allang Inungu for Strathmore.

Nairobi Simba vs Jaguars
Smarting from last weekends 4 – 3 loss, Nairobi Simba are traveling to Western Kenya. Nairobi Simba takes on Western Jaguars in Kakamega at 3 pm on Saturday. This will be Jaguars second match of the season and they will be looking to get all three points from their visitors; who are currently having a bad run in the league.

Simba have had a disastrous league run in the absence of inspirational striker Zack Aura and will be counting on their two new players from Pakistan, Captain Ambi, Veteran Coolie and new signing Kaluna to regain respect in the league. Jaguars tactician Peter Wokova will be banking on his new recruits who form the bulk of the Jaguars team to carry the Western mantle.
