Vaisakhi updates and revised fixtures

April 18, 2011.. Hockey action returned to City Park stadium as the Kenya Hockey Union’s Vaisakhi International tournament kicked off this past weekend. Despite several foreign based teams canceling their attendance at the last minute, the tournament took off well on Saturday morning with last years runner-up Kenya Police wiping the floor with junior league side Kenya Polytechnic in a largely one-sided match that ended 9 -0 in favor of the corps.

The match was followed by Strathmore University mens team battling against national league side Parklands in a match that ended 4 – 0 in favor of the students. Parklands had put up a spirited defense and conceded only one goal in the first half while creating several scoring chances of their own but failing to score.

The students returned after the break with a sence of purpose, and quickly scored 2 field goals within the first 15 minutes of teh second half before netting a late 4th goal with 3 minutes left on the clock.

The match of the day however pitted defending KHU league champions Orange Telkom against universities league champions Strathmore ladies (The Scorpions). It was the first time the teams were meeting and the match lived to its expectations.

Despite mounting wave after wave of attack and controlling the ball more, Strathmore could not get a way past the experienced Orange Telkom side, and it was the Orange’s Pristine Njeri that drew blood by scoring the lone goal in the first half.

The students, led by Captain Lilian Aura, quickly regrouped but could not get past the solid Orange defense.

Saturday wrap-up: Strathmore vs Parklands (4-0). Nairobi Simba vs Karate ( walkover for Nairobi). Orange Telkom vs Strathmore Ladies (1-0). Kenya Police vs Kenya Polytechnic (9-0).

Saturday also saw the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) release revised fixtures for the tournament after foreign teams canceled their participation at the last minute. No reasons were given for the cancellation but word is that a number of teams kept off due to leadership wrangles in their home federations.
