Nairobi Simba thump parkroad as Strathmore triumps

Mar 9, 2011 – Reigning KHU floodlights champions Nairobi Simba left no doubt as to their intentions for the 2011 season of the Kenya Hockey Union league when they put a whooping 8 goals past regulars Parkroad Hockey Club in a largely one sided match played at City Park, Nairobi.

Zack Aura was on point, getting 5 goals for Simba before Asif Shah completed the rout with his own hat-trick. Veteran Tom Olal  netted the consolation goals for Parkroad in the Sunday 4 pm encounter.

This is one of the highest score-lines since the exit of the Armed Forces Hockey team in the last decade.

Strathmore Scorpions (ladies) had earlier caused a major upset by drubbing last seasons runner-up USIU-A ladies (Spartans) 2 – 1. The Spartans had the upper hand when Pauling Naise scored in the 28th minute in the only goal of the first half.  However, the Strathmore Scorpions were all over their opponents in the second half with Winnie Odhiambo equalizing in the 49th minute and inspirational captain Lilian Aura sealing the win in the 66th minute.

USIU-A scorpions missed the services of their former captain Barbra Simiyu who has moved to Orange Telkom while Strathmore were out to make a statement on their intentions to take over the hockey scene in the new season.

The lower mens league saw a classic universities derby: Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) powered past University of Nairobi 2-0 in the men’s national hockey league. Kevin Sitati scored the first goal in the 21st minute before Peter Njoroge added the second seven minutes later.

On Saturday (Mar 5, 2011), champions Strathmore Gladiators (men) dismissed promoted side Karate Axiom by 4 goals to nothing. Fred Oracha, George Mutira and new recruit Emanuel Simiyu scored for the Gladiators. Simiyu scored a brace.

Also in the mens national league, Kimathi University thrashed Kenya Polytechnic 3 – 0 courtesy of goals from Simon Mwangi, Fred Nyaga and Dan Waweru.
