Kenya Hockey weekend report (KUSA and Provincial School Games)

ega_team_09_1_0March 30, 2011 One of the most electrifying hockey matches were witnessed this past weekend (27 – 28th March) with a lot of pride and egos at stake.

KUSA

First off was the national hockey play-offs of the Kenya University Sports Association games (KUSA) that was played at City Park Nairobi after the national team training was cancelled at the last minute. The play-off matches, lasting 40 minutes with each half at 20 minutes, were played on a round robin basis where the top two teams were to meet at the finals.

The ladies matches saw Kenyatta Uni (K.U) battle to a barren draw with national league side Strathmore Scorpions, before the Scorpions drubbed Moi Chepkoilel Campus ladies 7 goals to nothing. Kenyatta proceeded to have a second baren draw with Maseno University ladies while Maseno also drew with Moi chepkoilel campus. Kenyatta then drew 1-all with Moi Chepkoilel while Maseno succumbed to a 5 – 0 loss to strathmore scorpions.

The KUSA finals saw Kenyatta Univ emerge as runner up for ladies while USIU-A were runners up for men. Strathmore men (Gladiators) and Strathmore ladies emerged overall winners.

Despite not emerging winners, the KUSA western conference teams, notably Moi Chepkoilel campus and Maseno University gave a good account of themselves. The teams are set to go places if the continue in their pursuit for greatness.

School Games

The Kenya Hockey scene was also active at the high school level, with the finals of various provincial games going on to determine the representatives at the national kenya hockey games in two weeks time.

All expected the games to be competitive and fiery, but no one was ready for the package of suprises. First off was the Nyanza province finals where little known St. Barnabas (girls) drubbed pre-match favorites Asumbi Girls 2 goals to nothing. This was followed by another surprise result with St. Joseph Rapogi putting 3 goals past the boys pre-match favorites and national games regulars Kisumu Day.

The boys finals was a heated contest, with Kisumu day commanding proceedings for large parts of the game. They however will have themselves to blame as their strikers failed to convert a more than 3 open goal scoring chances. Rapogi created few chances but had creative players who made the most of their chances.

The Rift Valley provincial finals (played on 20/21st March) were also hotly contested and full of surprise. Angeline Nyangasi coached a little known school (Kapkolei) to the finals of both the boys and girls finals. Kapkolei girls caused the major upset by winning the final match while their boys team lost by the narrowest of margins, 2 – 1 to national schools hockey regulars St, Anthony boys.

Central provincial finals saw Maryhill girls get a 2 – 1 win over kabare girls in the semis to book a ticket in the finals to face Kerugoya Girls who had beaten limuru girls 3 – 1.  Kerugoya, the pre-match favorites proceeded to earn a 2 – 0 win over Maryhill, booking a ticket to the national hockey finals. The boys games saw Alliance high get a 3 – 1 win over Nyeri high to book their place in the national schools finals.

Other matches saw Shimo la Tewa win the coast provincial title, while the Eastern province finals will be held this coming weekend (April 2nd – 3rd). Also coming up this weekend is the Kenya colleges ball games to be held at Eregi Teachers College.

Summary

  • Nyanza: St. Joseph Rapogi (boys) / St. Barnabas (girls)
  • Western: FS Kamusinga [defending], Kakamega High (boys) / Butere Girls / Misikhu [defending] (girls)
  • Rift Valley: St. Anthony (boys) / Kapkolei (girls)
  • Central: Alliance High (boys) / Kerugoya (girls)
  • Eastern: * to be played*
  • Coast: Shimo la tewa (boys)
Congratulations to the qualifying teams and their coaches for the hard work and time invested in training the young players.

KHU 2011 League Fixtures (Complete)

KENYA HOCKEY UNION LEAGUES FIXTURES 2011

City park, Nairobi at night

The Kenya Hockey Union has released the complete 2011 league fixtures, along with the names of the registered teams. The teams are divided into the three respective leagues: National Men, National Women, and Premier league men.

The two mens leagues feature 12 teams while the national womens league features 7 teams, inlcuding new entrant Daystar University ladies team. The mens national league has two new teams: Daystar University Men and Multimedia University.

The league still features a one-leg format, spread over the entire 2011 year. What raises eyebrows however is the fact that the one-leg format was meant to provide ample time for the national team to train and play friendlies, yet the time slots for the teams training sessions remain relatively same as was the previous year.

It is however commendable that the union has released a complete seasons schedule.

‘Coolie’ powers Simba past Wazalendo as Greensharks triumps

Tom Olal of Parkroad (red/black) in action against Western Jaguars in a past match

March 21, 2011… NOCK Kenya floodlights hockey tournament winners Nairobi Simba extended their reign at the top of the KHU mens premier league table by getting a second win in as many matches this past weekend.

Nairobi Simba edged out old-timers Wazalendo by 1 – 0 in a tightly contested match on Sunday evening. The match was marred by complaints from both teams on poor officiating, and had to be stopped for 10 minutes when Wazalendo players threatened to walk out of the pitch in protest. This followed a contested call by one of the match officials, giving Nairobi Simba a penalty flick on the grounds that a Wazalendo player, Limo*, had blocked a goal bound ball with a ‘back-stick’.

The Wazalendo players latter agreed to have the flick taken and, much to their relief, veteran goal keeper James Owiti blocked the penalty flick. The tense match then went on to completion without any incidences. Simba stalwart Inderjit Matharu scored the loan goal in the 39th minute through a short corner.

This was the second successive loss for Wazalendo after having lost to Green Sharks the previous weekend. This leaves Wazalendo rooted at the bottom 4 of the KHU mens premier league table.

Earlier on, Greensharks had battled to a narrow 3 – 2 win over USIU-A in another tightly contested KHU premier league match. This was the second win for the Sharks and the second loss for the students in as many matches.

The self-sponsored club had trailed the students for much of the match and was forced to come from 2 – 1 down to level and get the winning goal after a momentary lapse of concentration by the USIU-A side. Kevin Simuyu opened the scores for the Sharks in the 28th minute but USIU-A’s Caleb Mutere quickly canceled the lead less than 5 minutes latter. Caleb was on point once again a minute before half time, giving the students a 2 – 1 half time lead.

However, Greensharks attacking duo of Leon Magomere and Wachira did not relent in their pursuit for an equalizer. They were rewarded after Leon got the equalized 22 minutes into the second half and substitute Frank Omondi netted the winner 3 minutes latter.

The first match on Sunday saw league returnees Nakuru Athletic Club making minced meat of debutants Multi-media University by drubbing them 3 goals to nothing. Multimedia University however gave a good account of themselves, creating several scoring chances but failing to capitalize.

Saturday saw KCA-U hand Parkroad their second defeat of the season in a match that ended 2 – 0. The University students exerted their dominance from the start but were kept on check by the experienced Parkroad side. KCA’s Inspirational player Gordon Oduor ‘Godi’, and Bildad Namawa netted the two goals.

Parkroad lost one of its key players, Fred Omondi, to injury from a raised ball, giving the students the upper hand in the duel. The injured player was rushed to the nearby Agakhan hospital for treatment for an eye-socket fracture.

Summary:
Sunday: Nairobi Simba 1 – Wazalendo 0, USIU-A 2 – Green Sharks 3, Nakuru Athletic 3 – Multimedia Uni 0

Saturday: Parkroad 0 – KCA 2, Nakuru Athletic 1 – Parklands 1
