Strathmore Gladiators voted the team of the year 2010

Strathmore University held its annual sports and clubs award gala was on Friday, January 21 in the university’s auditorium. The Chief Guest was Mr Martin Keino, a sports marketer, retired athlete, and son of the of legendary Kipchoge Keino.

The team of the year was Gladiators, the men’s hockey team who defended their Kenya Hockey Union premier league title and represented Kenya in the Africa Club Championships in Accra Ghana, where it emerged fourth in its maiden appearance.

The coach of the year award went to the Gladiators and Scorpions (ladies hockey team) coach Meshack Senge.

George Mutira and Lillian Aura were voted the hockey men and women MVPs respectively. George was instrumental in men’s back to back league titles in the last two seasons while Lillian Aura led the Scorpions to win the East Africa University Games (December 2010) in its maiden appearance.

Meshack noted that the 2011 season was going to be a tough one for Strathmore Gladiators, having defended the premier league title and in line to represent Kenya again in the Africa Club Championships in December 2011. However, he expressed confidence that the team will better its performance in this years edition.

Other players awarded were Hockey (Men) – Seth Oburu and Hockey (Women) Laura Gichau for rookies of the year and Hockey Men – Emmanuel Keya and Hockey Women – Eva Nkatha for the most promising players.
