Orange Ladies Hockey team announces major changes ahead of the National Ladies Hockey League

The Orange Ladies Hockey team has beefed up its technical bench ahead of the Kenya Hockey Union season that begins in March.

Team Captain and veteran national goalkeeper Josephine Ataro, and experienced players Rose Mbulo, Betty Tioni and Jackline Ogot, will be joining Coach Jos Openda in strategic engagement aimed to steer the team to new heights of success.

Openda said this was one of the steps that they are taking to maintain their leadership in the local league and as they prepare for continental and international competitions later the year.

“The four players who have been elevated to the technical benches are all trained coaches and have represented the country at an international level. I believe that their experience and skills will come in handy and we nurture the existing players and new sign-ups to team”, he said.

Among the players confirmed to be joining the team this season is former number one goal keeper in the Under-16 national team; Cynthia Onyango. Cynthia has already been training with the team after she finished her O-level’s at Lwak Girls High School.

The team has also signed up Ruth Njoki, Sarah Bonareri, Lucy Waguthi and Nancy Wanjui, who were among the star players at Kerugoya Girls Secondary School as well as Tracy Nungari who was in the St. Georges High School team. Defender Mercy Khayeli who was in Misihu High school has also joined the team.

Openda said the new sign-ups put up a good performance at the qualifier matches of the Kenya Hockey Union Invitational Floodlit Tournament matches that were held over the weekend.

He said they chose the new sign ups based on their experience in their former school based teams and potential they exude. He said they will train together with the existing players in the team so that they can together forge a formidable front in the national hockey league.

The coach has also revealed that they are currently engaged in high-level talks with players from other teams, with a view to strengthening the team that has maintained a stellar performance in the local ladies league.
