Sliders regain form as Strathmore pressures Police

The last weekend of August had lots of great hockey going on with a few surprises too! In the mens premier league matches, all the top four teams were in action.

Current leaders Kenya Police were facing their toughest test yet against number 2, Nairobi Simba. Both teams are yet to loose a math this season and they seemed to like it left that way after battling to a 3 – 3 draw. The draw ensured that Kenya Police maintained its top slot, though its Nairobi Simba that breathed a sigh of relief since it has faced all its toughest opponents (Strathmore, Green Sharks and Kenya Police) and got draws from them all.

Current league champions Strathmore University Gladiators were put to the test late Sunday evening, but managed to get a labored 2 -1 win over a resilient Parkroad team. Strathmore were the first to score in the 6th minute but Parkroad got the equalizer 15 minutes latter. The students then scored the winning goal in the second half.

In Mombasa, last seasons semi-finalists Green Sharks were held to a 2 – 2 draw by a hard fighting Mvita team. The Sharks seemed complacent and looked a distant team from the one that put 5 goals past Wazalendo just over a fortnight ago.

The weekend results leave Kenya Police as number one with 14 points, Strathmore at number two with 13 points and Nairobi Simba at number three with 12 points. All teams, with the exception of Kisumu Simba, Western Jaguars and USIU-A have played at least 5 games.

The womens league saw sliders regain their respect by drumming two goals past their hosts Mombasa Sports Club. Sliders have had a poor streak and the win serves as a morale boost for the once formidable team.

Other matches saw Kimathi University loose to Parklands hockey club. The win puts Parklands in a good position to qualify for the premier league next season.
