One hand on the trophy – Kenya Police

Kenya hockey just witnessed a ‘league changing’ weekend with teams putting their best forward in the run up to the completion of the Kenya Hockey Union 2010 leagues.

KCA-U set the stage for the weekend with a 5-2 romping of USIU-A in a fast paced match on Saturday evening at City Park.  KCA were the first to concede a goal through USIU’s  John Kabuu. USIU’s lead was short lived as KCA quickly equalized in less than 5 minutes after clumsy defensive play from USIU. USIU scored the second goal but lost the lead once again. The resulting sea-saw match saw KCA stamp their authority, ending the match with a much deserved 5 – 2 win. This marked a fifth victory in a row for KCA-U and a swift sail through to a second position in the mens Premier league.

Earlier in the day during a KHU ladies league, Strathmore University (the Scorpions) had a comfortable 3 – 0 victory over visiting Mombasa Sports Club (msc). Were it not for their laid back approach, the Scorpions would have netted a dozen goals, with the visitors looking visible overwhelmed.

MSC were to crush 4 – 0 to Sliders the following morning.

Sunday afternoon saw a top of the league clash with current KHU league leaders Kenya Police battle it out with champions Strathmore Gladiators at City Park, Nairobi. Despite dominating the game, Strathmore’s poor scoring ability came to the fore as the Police men scored a goal and held on to their lead to the last minute. The students were awarded numerous short corners and at one point, had a total of 3 police players out on yellow cards but still failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage.

The win leaves Kenya Police with one hand on the KHU 2010 league trophy, a title the team is yet to win in its history.

Other weekend matches saw Kimathi University win Kenya Polytechnic 2-0 in a Kenya Hockey Union national league match while USIU-A ladies (Spartans) humbled Kenyatta University ladies by a similar margin in the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) league match.
