Umpires Conference – June 2010

Kenya Hockey gives you an opportunity to share your opinion on a wide range of topical issues affecting the game in Kenya.

Some matches of the 2010 season takes a break this weekend (19th/20th June) to allow for an Umpires Conference in Nairobi. Kenya Hockey would like to know: Are there any issues you would like to see addressed during or after the conference?

Some of the responses:

Brian “Referees raising tempers or digging up previous grudges and, because of a single player referees tend to develop a negative attitude towards an entire team.”
Dominic “Incentives for Umpires.”
Vincent “Relationship between umpires and players. Its degenerating into a contest of superiority.”
Gilbert “KHU should provide the basic items required by the umpires. Currently, the umpires buy their own whistles, cards, trainers, etc. And umpires must not be affiliated to any teams in the leagues.”
Dome says:

1. Relationships between umpires and players – umpires should know that they are mere arbitrators between two teams; not a boss and players should know that their duty is to arbitrate and should make life easy as possible. There is no contest of personality here; whether one was a good player or not before he/she became an umpire is not relevant.

2. KHU and the Kenya hockey umpires should look into lifting the morale of the umpires who are doing a good job under very strenuous conditions both financially and psychologically.

3. Both umpires and players should strive to respects each other as they are all human beings and with their weakness

3. KHU should strive to encourage the young and upcoming umpires to manage the big games because, where will one gain experience if the old recycled umpires are brought to manage games at City Park reason being that the young umpires lack experience?

4. One has to decide whether he/she still wants to play hockey or become an umpire.

5.Umpires should never be affiliated to any team whatsoever, they should be independent

6. The umpires should respect each other – there are situations where umpires, while not managing a particular game, are is seated with players and spectators on the terraces criticizing the mistakes of a fellow umpire in front of the spectators. What will the players will make of the umpire?

Kaluna says:

1. We operate in an environment whereby the same people who play this game are the fans;so these two roles should be appreciated and separated – ever wondered how the environment is in Europe for example where the stadiums are packed and fans are chanting, how will an umpire be able to pinpoint one person and decide to punish the fellow later? I think we should learn to co-exist with each other the same way we do co-exist with the magistrates and Judges.

2. The union should take the initiative to expose the umpires to the other levels of the game i.e. international tournaments and clinics. One wonders how some of the umpires will cope when video technology is adopted by the union (KHU). Video use is already in effect in Europe..

  1. Jamach says:

Umpires need to be fit able to run within the half pitch that they officiate in a match. Unfit fellows should not be given games to officiate.

They should be able to consult amongst themselves off and on Pitch.

They should be impartial when officiating. Am sure there are cases that some tend to be favoring some sides.
