KHU – League Standings [As at 01/07/10]

The Kenya Hockey Union 2010 league is taking shape with all teams in all leagues having played at least a match each.

The league tables are shaping up and the leagues big teams and new title chasers are beginning to stamp their authority and get noticed. Notably, Kenya Police and Telkom Orange are the run away league leaders for the men and women leagues each with a massive goal difference of + 11 and + 8 respectively.

Kenya Hockey Union womens league match pitting Strathmore Ladies (Scorpions) against the USIU Spartans; played at the City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi. USIU won 1 – 0 with an early first half goal. Strathmore created numerous chances but failed to convert while USIU asserted their mid-field authority throughout the entertaining match.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) national mens league match between Karate Axiom and Mombasa Sports Club at the City park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi on the 26th of June 2010. The well balanced match saw both teams create chances in both first and second halfs but ended in a 2 – 2 draw.

Kenya Hockey witnessed another eventful weekend (June 26th – 27th) both within Nairobi and out side. In Kisumu, league debeutants Western Jaguars put up a good show but were mauled 3 – 0 by a youthful Kisumu Simba. Simba dominated most of the proceedings.

The Lake side team was back on the pitch again on Sunday against the on-form Kenya Police. This time however, the Police maintained their unbeaten run and its clean sheet by walloping Kisumu Simba by 3 – 0. All the goals came in the second half.

In Mombasa, Telkom Orange was on a goal scoring rant, putting 6 goals past the hapless Mombasa Sports Club (MSC). MSC  however managed to get a consolation goal to leave the final score at 6 – 1.

In Nairobi, the City Park Hockey Stadium was the venue for riveting Kenya Hockey both on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday 2:00 pm saw current league champions Strathmore University men regain their winning ways by dismissing visiting Mvita IX 2 goals to 1. The match was however marred by controversy after the Mvita captain was red carded in the second half for committing a second bookable offense and insulting the umpire. Another coastal side, Mombasa Sports (Men) managed to get a 2 – 2 draw against Karate Axiom in the 4:00 pm match.

On Sunday 27th, Mombasa Sports (Men) lost 1 – 2 to Kimathi University in an early morning match. Mombasa Sports were visibly overwhelmed by the university side. Mvita IX were back on the pitch at 12:00 pm against Park road and quickly stamped their authority by getting 3 goals past the dazed Park road defense in the first half. Parkroad latter regained their composure to score 2 goals in the second half but Mvita got the last laugh with a penalty flick in the dying minutes of the match. Final score 4 – 2.

The universities derby saw league new comers Strathmore University Ladies go down by a 1 – o to a well oiled USIU-A ladies team. Despite the solid USIU-A midfield play, Strathmore created numerous chances, including a whooping 11 penalty corners but failed to convert.

Strathmore Ladies travel to Mombasa next weekend as Park Road and USIU-A men seek to entertain Western Jaguars in Nairobi.

The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) 2010 league resumes this weekend (June 26 – 27) with key matches being out of Nairobi.

On Sunday, Kenya Police take their unbeaten run to lake side town, Kisumu while Mombasa Sports hosts Telkom Orange in Mombasa. Kenya Police is yet to concede a goal this season while Kisumu is yet to play its first match.  It will be a busy weekend for Kisumu as they have a match on Saturday against newly promoted Western Jaguars; who are keen to make an impression in their first Premier League match.

Coastal side Mvita IX take on reigning Kenya Hockey (Men) league champions Strathmore University Gladiators at the City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

New National Womens league entrants Strathmore University Ladies team takes on seasoned side USIU-A Ladies on Sunday in a classic Universities derby at the City Park Hockey Stadium. The match is set to rekindle rivalry between the two sides with the USIU-A ladies having had the better of the Strathmore Ladies to win the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Hockey title earlier in the year.

Earlier in the day, Kimathi University is set to take on Mombasa Sports Club in the Mens National League Encounter.
